ABOUT

As an artist, I work primarily in painting, drawing and printmaking. My art practice reflects my many interests in the human experience, however grand or insignificant, profound or ridiculous. I love stories and admire story-tellers, so I strive to build images that are intriguingly readable, but also maintain an element of ambiguity regarding the narrative subject-matter. Some issues with which I am perpetually concerned: figuration in art; absurdity within our contemporary culture; de-skilling as a result of our dependence on technology; baseball; the inevitable collapse of cultures and political structures; habit, vice and vulnerability; and the evolving definition of masculinity relative to our shared social experiences, among others. I actively pursue many different artful manifestations through a purposefully diverse variation of imagery, narratives and material use, in a conscious effort to resist branding, which I believe is a market-driven pressure intended to narrow the scope and overall aesthetic of an artist's work, in order to present a quickly digestible example of it. For this reason, I tend to work on many different series of artworks simultaneously. This series of little seascape paintings reflects my interest in reclaiming an old painting subject that is often attributed to the idea of the sublime, or terrestrial beauty, and make a snarky "round-earth" joke, while also embracing the inherent romanticism of the subject. In all of my work the act of drawing is the most essential element.
