Joseph Montgomery’s (1979, Northampton, MA, US) work creates virtual structures and coded syntaxes of imaginary sculpture and painting. Montgomery’s expansion of painting into the virtual results in generative representations: collage, shim, doll, wallpaper. Populating this animated environment are series of characters anthropomorphizing the artist’s psychological space, inhabiting both art history and alternative ambition — a world full of images — their differences the result of recombinations of matter; collage creating both diversity and awareness of the equal building blocks upon which that diversity is built. Within this world building there is ok-ness, enough-ness. The animations watch thought, watch judgement, model a wheel of awareness and not suffering. The collages gather what exists into new manifestations representing possibility and permutation.

Recent solo exhibitions include Wrecked Angle, Ceysson & Benetierre; Human Stain, CAR DRDE, Bologna; Pigpen Dispossessed, Galleri Urbane, Dallas; Joe, Dürst Britt & Mayhew, Den Haag; DOLLS, Paula Cooper Gallery; Heads, Calves, Laurel Gitlen; Doll Index, Peter Blum Gallery; and Five Sets Five Reps at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA). His work was in the seminal group exhibition Painter Painter at The Walker Art Centre in Minneapolis. Work by Montgomery is held in private and public collections, including the Centraal Museum Utrecht and The Walker Art Centre.
