Distant Snapshots

Galleri Urbane kicks off its fall 2019 season with a group exhibition of new work by gallery artists. Titled Distant Snapshots, the exhibition provides a look at the overall artistic vision of the gallery while also offering a preview of what to anticipate from solo exhibitions in the coming months.
PRIVATE COLLECTION
July 24 - August 24, 2019
Galleri Urbane is delighted to present the gallery’s summer group exhibition, titled Private Collection. Curated by Director of Exhibitions Adrian Zuniga and situated across the gallery’s two main exhibition spaces, Private Collection considers the act of collecting and its accompanying personal and social implications. Including represented artist Stephen D’Onofrio and visiting artists B. Chehayeb, Paho Mann, Lori Larusso, and Rachel Grobstein, the exhibition acknowledges that the objects and experiences we collect can serve as reflections of ourselves and society at large. Through a variety of approaches, each artist addresses a unique mode of collecting, exploring both personal and shared cultural phenomena that are relevant to contemporary life.
Abby Sherrill: Moody Swatch
June 15 - July 13, 2019
Galleri Urbane is pleased to host the gallery’s second solo presentation by gallery artist Abby Sherrill. The recent body of work has been developed as a result of Sherrill’s daily maintenance of a digital textile printer. In the repetitive task, the artist uncovers a duality of technology’s potential, both as a task-oriented machine and subjective, process-based experience. Moody Swatch presents numerous artistic exercises by Sherrill that invite viewers to meditate on the mundanity of daily routines and work.
Sam Mack: Pass
June 15 - July 13, 2019
On the heels of their MFA thesis exhibition, good dyke art, Sam Mack presents their first solo exhibition with Galleri Urbane. Titled Pass, the exhibition is comprised of a newly produced body of work that remains rooted in the ideas of institutional critique and its contradictions that drove Mack’s graduate studies. In this exhibition, methods and materials of display commonly utilized by galleries and museums are installed in conjunction with hardware store materials in an attempt to highlight their visual similarities despite belonging to disparate environments with very different behavioral expectations. Mack juxtaposes these seemingly low-brow elements with iconography of the art institution to complicate the narrative of the gallery as a neutralized space.
Jason Willaford: After a long pause…
April 6 - May 25, 2019
In his first solo exhibition with the gallery since 2016, Jason Willaford returns to present his latest body of vinyl-based constructions. After A Long Pause... includes work completed in 2019 that have been approached from a more intuitively-driven process than Willaford’s previous investigations with the medium. Part-painting and part-sculpture, the pieces in this exhibition resist conventional categorization as Willaford has developed a more sophisticated relationship with his materials.
Christopher Paul Dean: Reconfigured
April 6 - May 25, 2019
Galleri Urbane is delighted to host Dallas newcomer Christopher Paul Dean for his first solo exhibition in the region. The work in Reconfigured belongs to an on-going series that began during Dean’s graduate studies at Savannah College of Art and Design and includes work made from 2017 to the cpresent. Through multiple two- and three-dimensional explorations, Dean’s exhibition invites viewers to reconsider their own past, current, and future interactions with the familiar.
Melinda Laszczynski: The Love Lives of Stones
February 23 - March 22, 2019
Galleri Urbane is pleased to present an exhibition of new works by Houston-based artist Melinda Laszczynski. Her second solo show with the gallery, The Love Lives of Stones presents paintings on panel and highlights playful new explorations in ceramic and watercolor. Different in many ways, these three mediums find common ground for Laszczynski in their ability to create tactile works that exist in the liminal space between looking and feeling.
Benjamin Terry: A Romantic Gesture
February 23 - March 22, 2019
Exhibiting with Galleri Urbane for the first time, Benjamin Terry presents his newest body of work in an exhibition titled A Romantic Gesture. The show follows the lead of Terry’s recent exhibitions that have used site-specific, painting-based installations as a means to engage with personal narratives. Utilizing this expanded mode of painting, Terry invites viewers to consider the exhibition as a love letter to his partner.
Stephen D’Onofrio: Market Research
January 12 - February 16, 2019
Two years after D’Onofrio’s inaugural solo show with the gallery, Market Research builds upon the artist’s recent use of the still life motif as an archetype for exploring the mass production of art in today’s retail-driven design industries. In these new paintings, the classical composition of a still life begins to break down, edging towards abstraction through colliding and dissected imagery.
Liss LaFleur: Tutti Frutti
January 12 - February 16, 2019
Tutti Frutti, the first solo exhibition at Galleri Urbane by Liss LaFleur, is an immersive multi-media installation anchored by blown glass objects and a new film. Inspired by Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay “Notes on ‘Camp’,” and the “fruit machine,” a military device used by the U.S. and Canadian government during the Cold War to detect and purge LGBT individuals, this exhibition examines the semiotics of fruit in relation to the queer body.
